Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a skin condition characterised by painful boils, abscesses, and scarring on the skin. The exact causes of HS are not fully understood, but the condition involves lesions commonly appearing around the hair follicles and sweat glands. HS mainly affects areas of the body where there are folds of skin, such as the groin region and armpits.
Treatments for HS consist of antibiotics for the associated infections in the skin, the prescription of retinoid drugs, use of steroids, or in some cases, surgery to reduce pain by removing scars and lumps on the skin.
